If there’s one thing no one expected, it was the surprisingly lovely weather shining through the UK recently. Hopping from snow, to drizzle, to glorious sunshine all within the space of a few weeks, the general population has not wasted the opportunity: shedding coats, running to the beach, going to walks and just praying that this Spring weather lasts.
With a few daffodils already peaking their heads around UK gardens and the smell of chocolate eggs rich in the air, actual Spring isn’t too far away, with many people wanting to capture the season in their home. Most notably, in their kitchens.
While we’re not suggesting you do a full kitchen redesign for every season, there are plenty of little things you can do around your space to create a lovely Spring kitchen design.

Let in the Light
If there’s one thing that the Spring usually brings, it’s sunshine.
With the days getting longer, it makes the perfect opportunity to get some of that brightness into your kitchen to banish any lingering winter blues. If you’re looking for a bit of a redesign, then you can’t go wrong with incorporating lighter colours like cream or white into your design. As naturally reflective materials, they can bounce light around your space to get rid of any dark shadows and really open up your room.
If you’re working with a smaller kitchen, making sure it’s well lit is a great way of giving the illusion of more space. Shadows and dark corners can make a room feel much more cramped, so with the addition a few well-placed lights like LEDs under cabinets or bright hanging lamps, you can dispel unwanted dark spots.
If you’re looking to go further, a skylight is a great way to maximise natural daylight in your space as well as making the room a lot airier.
Florals
If there’s one thing we associate with Spring, besides hay fever, it’s flowers.
One thing that spring is known for is flowers and lots of them, so why not decorate with some around your space? A bouquet on your windowsill or on a safe space on a countertop is one of the best ways to incorporate some spring joy into your kitchen design without having to make any major design changes. There are plenty of seasonal blooms to take advantage of already! Daffodils bloom everywhere this time of years, as well as tulips and hyacinths, so why not add a splash of nature to the heart of your home?
If you’re not a fan of flowers or have a pollen allergy, then there are plenty of other accessories you can use to brighten up your space. Perhaps you’re looking for something fresh so why not try filling a clear vase with lemons or limes, or a few scented candles dotted around for a pop of colour. If you have any empty wall space, try a fun art piece or a chalkboard to leave funny messages on to help brighten up your day.
Fresh Colours
If you’re looking for a colour scheme that exudes freshness, then you can’t go wrong with green and white. Nothing quite says spring like growing plants, so choosing white for countertops and cupboards and matching them with green accents in lampshades, some cushions or decorative fruit pieces to help capture the feeling. If you don’t feel like repainting, then just adding some greenery to your kitchen design with a few plants on your windowsill can do wonders to brighten up your space.
Spring is also a time of softer shades, so incorporating some pastels into your spring kitchen design can look wonderful. Pale-blue units paired with soft greys or whites gives your space a simple splash of colour that isn’t too harsh on the eyes and is great if you’re going for a more neutral feel, as well as giving your kitchen an airier look.
While these colours are very popular around springtime, they look good at all times of the year, so don’t worry about having to repaint your room every 3 months to better match the time of year.
Spring Clean
No one likes cleaning, but Spring does make the opportunity to tidy up a tad. Spring is a time of rebirth and new beginnings, so getting rid of all that rubbish you’ve accumulated over the winter months is a great start.
We’ve talked about clearing clutter on this blog before, so we’ll try not to repeat ourselves too much, but after the winter season your kitchen is most likely full of old junk and food you got at Christmas and never used/ate, so starting by clearing all that out is a good place to begin.
Having less clutter will instantly make your space look larger and feel airier, things that are key in spring kitchen designs. The best ways to achieve this is to invest in some cleverer storage solutions like a Lemans, buying smaller appliances or taking advantage of your wall and under sink space.
If you’re not fond of having loads of cabinets in your kitchen, or it doesn’t have any, open shelving can be a great alternative that still offers plenty of space for your items, as well as allowing easy access to it all! Perfect if you’re tired of digging through to the back of the cupboard to get that mixing bowl or blender.
Thinking about changing your kitchen design any time soon? Maybe for Spring? Is it something you’ve been putting off doing for longer than you’d care to mention at this point?
