Enjoying A White Kitchen Design

Oh since there’s no place to go,

Or in the case for a lot of the UK: Let the country come to screeching halt after a few flakes are shaken from the sky.

While white Christmases around these parts are almost unheard of, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little of that wintery spirit in your kitchen design. White is a classic colour, used in architecture and design all over the place and especially in the kitchen. While it’s great for capturing the frosty mood of a chilly winter, that doesn’t mean that it’ll look out of place any other time of year. Thanks to its versatility as a shade, white can fit around almost any design! And while many consider it a “safe” shade, this year it’s proven to be very fashion forward.

Brighten Your Space

If your kitchen doesn’t see much daylight, having a white kitchen is an easy way to add some brightness. As a naturally reflective material, white can bounce light around your kitchen helping dispel shadows and can open up a space when paired with the right lighting.

If you’re looking to go further, a skylight is a great way to maximise natural daylight in your space as well as making the room a lot airier.

Add Some Stone

White pairs well with many materials, if there’s one that’s proving popular right now, it’s stone. When used as the focal point of an all-white design, stone can bring a wonderfully organic touch to your kitchen as well as a natural elegance.

If you’re looking for a unique design, choose a stone like granite. Not only is it one of the most durable materials you can use for worktops, but each piece with have its own particular colouring and veining. Great for a countertop or a splashback!

Wood Elements

If you’re partial to a more rustic design, then you can’t go wrong matching a white kitchen with wood. While white is a clean, bright colour, it does have the drawback of being a little cold. Luckily, wood has a natural warmth to it that can balance out the chill.

From wooden bar stools, to your countertop, to fun accessories dotted around your space, there are so many different ways to add some warm wooden accents to your kitchen design.

While wood can fit in many different aspects of design, more often than not it’s used as flooring. It’s a durable, classic material that’s always having new styles and techniques developed around it.  A recent trend that’s taking off is engineered wood flooring. It’s made of a base made of plywood or fibreboard with a thin layer of solid wood put on top. The advantage of this is that it’s stronger than regular wood flooring and won’t wear or split after too long.

Wood is such a popular choice in the kitchen, and you don’t even need to use the real stuff! Almost any material these days can mimic the grain of wooden planks, so if you’re a fan of the look but not the feel, you can still enjoy all the benefits of a wooden aesthetic in your kitchen.

Create a Contrast

You don’t have to use white in every aspect of your kitchen to reap the benefits, especially as overdoing it could leave your space feeling rather clinical. As a neutral colour, white is perfect for a monochrome colour scheme. Add a glossy black countertop or chairs to create a stark contrast, or pair white walls or cabinets with darker grey elements.

Mixed monochrome designs were very popular this year, and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere in 2019 either! Whether you add a few black or grey elements or have an equal split between each colour, it’s the perfect colour scheme to bring some modern chic to your kitchen design.

A Splash of Colour

Just because we’ve gone on and on about how great a white kitchen is, doesn’t mean you can’t infuse a little colour into your design!

We nearly always recommend a colourful splash in the kitchen to add some personality. Just make sure you know where to put it. Don’t go overboard or your design will look like a mess, but a few accent pieces here and there like a fruit bowl, a fun piece of art or some colourful lampshades will really make your space your own!

One of the best places to add colour is in the tiles. If you aren’t brave enough to commit to something vibrant in your wall colour, then you can still infuse a few bright shades with some funky tiles. This is where multi-coloured patterns can look great and give a real “lived-in” vibe to your space.
