In every blog or news article you read about kitchen design, you’ll see the term modern kitchen being thrown around a lot. But what does it really mean? With time constantly marching on, what is considered ‘modern’ is forever changing, especially when it comes to kitchen design.
So, if you want a modern design that’s going to last, what can you do? Luckily there are a few designs and styles that take advantage of modern technology while also giving your space a timeless feel so you won’t have to go through a complete redesign every few years.
Let’s take a look at some of our favourite design tips.
Bold Colours or Pretty Pastels?
If there’s one thing that has remained popular for a while, it’s bright colours. Proving very popular this year pops of bold colour are a great way to infuse some personality into your design. If you see yourself as a louder or more fun person, then adding some bright accents is one of the best ways to integrate that into your kitchen.
However, if you’re more of a gentle soul, pastels are also a shade that haven’t gone out of style and don’t look like they’re going anywhere fast. From soft pinks, to dreamy blues, to pale yellows, pastels are a great way to highlight pieces of your design without going overboard.
We have gone on about the benefits of islands MULTIPLE times on this blog… and for good reason. An island is a feature that can really transform so your space, and we don’t say that lightly. From storage, to cooking, to decoration, a kitchen island is a feature you’ll find yourself using basically every day.
One modern trend that isn’t that we love is making your kitchen a more social space. An island is a great way to achieve that. With the extra seating an island can provide, people are able to sit around and chat while you prepare food. With the extra counter space, friends and families can even help you cook! After all, nothing tastes better than something prepared with love (even if cooking skills may vary).
If you want to get all the utility out of an island that you possibly can, why not add a small hob or sink? Perfect if you’re looking for both convenience and style in your modern kitchen.
Shaker Style Reigns
In our last blog, we talked all about the benefits of a Shaker Kitchen. Just because it’s an older design does NOT mean it doesn’t fit into the modern kitchen mould. The best way to describe a Shaker design is timeless. Due to its simplicity it can very easily be outfitted with a number of clever and modern features and storage solutions.
If you’re going for a more simple, rustic look but still want a modern feel, a Shaker Kitchen is definitely the way to go. Check out our previous post on it HERE for more details.
Having the right light in your kitchen is crucial for setting the right mood. In more modern kitchen designs, the key is layering lightning. This not only looks very chic but also helps dispel and big shadows and opens up your space more.
Hanging pendant lights from the ceiling is a style that continues to be popular, but now more than ever they’re being paired with under-cabinet LED lighting as well. Not only will the LEDs add a nice contrast to existing light features, but they’ll also illuminate your work surfaces a lot better. This is a plus as you always want as much light as possible when cooking, especially when handling knives. You can also turn off the main lights and leave them on if you’re looking for some better mood lighting in your modern kitchen.
Want a kitchen that shines as much as your personality? Metals have been a staple in kitchen designs for decades at this point, but a few are becoming especially prevalent this year. While stainless steel isn’t going away, golds and brasses have become especially popular in modern kitchen designs as bright accents and statement features.
Luckily, if you’re looking to brighten up your space, gold or brass finishes don’t have to break the bank and can bring a real elegance to your design. Golden taps and sinks are popping up a lot in kitchen trends this year, pairing well with monochrome colours like darker shades as well as white kitchens.
If there’s one thing the world is becoming, it’s smarter… well for the most part. From smart assistants, to an entire subsection of food made just to look good for Instagram posts- the world as we know it has shifted drastically over the last decade when it comes to how technology is implemented.
While many people aren’t a fan of how much technology has become ingrained in the way we live our day-to-day lives, you can’t deny that there are some wonderfully convenient features you can incorporate into a modern kitchen design.
From Smart Coffee machines that you can programme from your phone, to Smart Fridges with a built in Alexa to read you recipes and order more milk when you’re running low, to a number of appliances that can connect to websites or apps to give you helpful cooking tips, it’s really one of the most on-the-nose ways to give yourself a more modern kitchen.
